Compensatory Education for All?

Posted By: Cintya Molina on January 14, 2014

One more author that does not make any mention of students with "special needs" or of special education. What an enormous blind spot? As the mother of a 4th grade boy in a California public school that has been denied at least 2.5 years of instruction in depressingly lacking classrooms and programs that purport to be specialized, I become more deeply disillusioned each day by the lack of awareness and of attention for children like my own. I jokingly say that we keep screaming "We are here!" like Dr. Seuss's Horton, claiming with him that our children are people, and students too.

If you don't mention our children, in all of their inherent diversity, and the ways in which they are dismissed from a very early age, many will not even know to think about them. Hope for their fullest development crumbles under the weight of these omissions in the public and national discourse.
