A perspective from a rural setting

Posted By: Sonja Williams on May 18, 2011
We conduct many afterschool sessions as part of our Migrant Education program, and I found your conclusions useful for improving our afterschool services. In a current survey on student engagement we are conducting, we have found that transportation is a major issue for students in rural and small town settings. Afterschool programs often do not provide transportation, and public transportation is not available in rural areas. At least 25% of our students cite the lack of transportation as the reason they do not attend afterschool instructional programs or co-curricular activities. Other reasons echoed your results.
