Re The Promise and Failure of Progressive Education

Posted By: david matheson on February 15, 2005

We read in this review that Switzerland has one of the most demanding core curriculums [sic] in the world. This is false on several levels. Like the USA, upon whose constitution the Swiss constitution of 1848 is based [the USA having drawn more than a little from the previous Swiss constitution in devising its own] Switzerland does not have a national curriculum in any shape or form. Indeed, by being plurilingual [and pluricultural], Switzerland cannot even have what is arguably a core curriculum by stealth as the USA has through the influences of the textbook manufacturers and population mobility. In fact, Switzerland has a separate school curriculum for each of its 26 Cantons [each of which is a sovereign state].
