Still hung up on identity

Posted By: William DuBay on December 20, 2006

It is sad to see how much the discourse on sexuality is still hung up on labeling and identity (the most perverse form of labeling). As many studies have indicated, sexual labeling is not just a function of stigma, it is the stigma.

There will be no progress in helping humans accept their sexual feelings as long as we continue to define sexual variation in terms of types of people. Worse, sexual labeling continues to alienate people from their own feelings, making them all the more difficult to integrate into their lives and personalities.
