No Child Left Behind

The succinct review is helpful. However, certain unstated prejudices make me wonder whether or not I want to read "No Child Left Behind? The Politics and Practice of School Accountability". I cannot help but notice that "opponents" of NCLB are almost always parenthetically (if not directly) identified as being "educators" and/or "unions". Nowhere, however, are the "proponents" of NCLB ever similarly identified -- parenthetically or otherwise. This suggests a bias that may -- or may not -- be subtle. Having experienced the "minimum proficiency" era in California ("survived" might be a better word), I find the description of the one chapter devoted to it to be somewhat understated and misleading. If the tone of the other chapters is similar, then perhaps this book -- seemingly a highly academic examination of an important piece of social engineering -- is really nothing more than a cleverly disguised political screed rather than an honest discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of NCLB.
