Literacy in the Lives of Young Men

Posted By: Edward Jones on July 30, 2002

It seems the critical issue is the distinction between literacy and literature. We are still embracing the notion that there is a literary canon that needs to be mastered by all educated people at time when we should instead be focusd on making sure all people are educated. A student who gets engrossed in technical manuals and popular magazines may eventually move on to great literature, but one who learns to hate reading due to compulsory exposure to seemingly irrelevant, antiquated and tedious assignments will due neither.
