The college is a community of scholars, a face-to-face, self-governing community, like a walled city within which teaching and learning and growing up are accomplished through the personal relations between the veterans and the young. Administrators and the spread of the administrative mentality among too many faculty members have corrupted this ideal, have separated the scholars from the students—by credits and courses and grades and curricula and contractural research—and have submerged conflict—by committees, public relations, aggrandizing the institution, paper communications, and the pretense of consensus. The result is a vastly inflated Establishment, preoccupied with its own preservation. The machinery of the institution must be tended, leaving the minds and souls of the students untended. The cure for this rottenness echoes Veblen: Get rid of the administrators; if necessary, secede from the Establishment.
