In the face of increasing fragmentation at the end of the twentieth century, the idea of common ground tantalizes America, but as Leah Hager Cohen reminds us in her superb book Train Go Sorry: Inside a Deaf World, "mainstreaming may be as American as motherhood and apple pie. But whose motherhood? Whose apple pie?" (p. 208). Cohen favors residential schools for the deaf, even though mainstreaming is "backed by the full weight of democratic ideals" and she knows "here in America segregation is supposed to be reviled" (p. 208). Passionately personal and highly political, Cohen explores the intersection between the world of the deaf and the world of the hearing with a novelistís pacing and skill. In this closely observed and exquisitely written book, she tells her own story of growing up hearing, a grandchild of deaf grandparents, at the Lexington School for the Deaf in Queens, New York, where her hearing father was director of child care, then principal, and now superintendent.
