The book begins with an article by the editors proposing that bilingual education research has an important contribution to make to the field of education in general in that it is an intellectual space in which "a vortex of classic questions about the nature of language, mind, and society" (p. 30) occurs. Most of the articles do permit the explorations of the linkages these classic questions suggest. They explore different aspects of bilingual education--history, societal assumptions and symbolisms, evaluations of effectiveness, elementary and secondary schools, teacher education, instructional programs and materials, and parents. The well- earned place for bilingual education research within general education gives the volume cohesiveness and a sense of assertiveness. In addition, two instructional notions integral to bilingual/multicultural education ascend with some potency: language as a resource and language as a conscious choice.
