The story of Anne Sullivan Macy, teacher and "other self" to Helen Keller, is told simply yet with sensitivity and great depth of feeling by Lorena Hickok in The Touch of Magic. As the author puts together the pieces of Anne's life, from foundling ward of a state institution to recipient of an honorary degree from Temple University, the reader will find himself deeply moved by this sympathetic portrayal of childhood loneliness, fear, and depression, out of which were born the compassion and resolute determination which characterized Anne's productive career in the face of almost impossible odds. Abandoned early in life by an alcoholic father, saddled with responsibility for a brother crippled by tuberculosis, and suffering from a diesase of the eyes which left her nearly blind and in almost constant pain, Anne Sullivan encountered little of the warmth, the patience, and the gentleness which she was able to give in...
