Educational Testing for the Millions is the latest addition to a growing list of publications concerned with standardized tests and their impact on the increasing numbers of children and adults in our society who are exposed to them. In attempting to provide parents of school-age children with a comprehensive as well as comprehensible guide through the miasma of stanines, IQs, and standard deviations that surrounds modern educational testing, Gene Hawes has put together what is probably the most understandable, complete, and generally useful popular volume on testing on the market today. Although it is aimed at parents, it should be required reading for educators, counselors, and testers—if not for its information about educational testing (which is impressive), then for the insights it affords into the concerns (and what ought to be concerns) of parents in the current "age of testing."
