Growth in reading depends upon maturation of the child's ability to think and reason and upon his linguistic capacities, as well as upon practice guided by systematic instruction. As the preceding chapter has shown, learning to read proceeds through a series of developmental steps that parallel the child's mental maturation and that are dependent upon his responses to a broadening environment and wider social experiences.
