The tie of young children to their family language and community values is so strong they are often unwilling or unable to make the cultural shift necessary to learn to speak and write in standard English. If schools are to be effective helping linguistically different children become bilingual (become literate in standard English as well as their home language), teachers must appreciate the importance of language and culture to the development of young children.
