The Role of Standards in Teaching and Teacher Education

The purpose of this chapter is to foster a discussion on the role of standards in teacher education, licensure, and certification as we enter the twenty-first century. Robert Roth characterized the 1990s as the “age of standards” and generated a comprehensive history and analysis of research and policy in this area. Likewise, others have published recent reviews of issues and challenges as standards are developed and applied. The report of the National Commission on Teaching and America’s Future based many of its recommendations for the improvement of teaching and learning on the use of professional standards as vehicles for improvement in teacher education, teacher licensure, and advanced teacher certification.
