This is a time of failed educational promises and, in the world our students will enter, it is also a time that is economically, ecologically, and epidemically precarious. Perhaps as a result, this is a time when talk of hope has re-entered the public domain. Most obviously, our new President struck a chord with his description of audacious hope – hope in the face of seeming impossibility – and rode that message to his unlikely victory. But this perceived need for hope might be especially acute for teachers, as their very work depends upon belief in the possibility of a better future. In the last years of the previous presidential administration, H. Svi Shapiro attempted to meet that need by inviting a wide range of progressive educators (some well-known, but others not) to contribute essays for a book on hope.
