In our post-September 11 culture, methods of addressing traumatic experiences in ways that help promote agency and ultimately healing have become a topic of interest in both the popular media and within the higher education community, as evidenced by the recent publication of a number of books that address the relationship between trauma and writing and the pedagogy of the writing classroom. Many writing teachers, especially those who permit students to choose their own writing topics, encounter student essays that address difficult life experiences, and these books are a response to that reality. Jeffrey Berman has spent much of his career addressing pedagogical issues that other college teachers have avoided as too risky, too dangerous, or too intense to handle, and these include student writings about suicide, sexual abuse, anorexia, and many other traumas that afflict young people in our culture.
