There are two fundamental questions about which practicing educators, mostly teachers, need to make decisions: the curriculum question, What to teach? and the instructional question, How to teach? Not surprisingly, the two questions have been answered in a multitude of ways down through the centuries, but not until the early decades of the twentieth century had a systematic effort been made to study and to understand as fully as possible how and why the curriculum question can be answered, especially how and why it can be answered in many different but equally appropriate ways. That effort, which began small, has developed into the expansive subfield of the academic study of education now known as curriculum studies, and, in my opinion, nobody has done more to promote the development of curriculum studies during the last four decades than has William F.
