Switzerland is a confederation of twenty-five states (cantons and semicantons) which are entirely independent for educational purposes. Each canton has its own educational organization, courses of study, and salary scale. The characteristics of each canton vary according as it is industrial or agricultural, urban or rural, plain or mountain, Protestant or Catholic or mixed, German, French, or Italian, bilingual or trilingual (as the Grisons).
