IN contrast to the almost indifferent policy of educators statesmen, and other responsible and forward looking people in the United States, Germany has for generations manifested marked interest toward training her future citizens for a knowledge, understanding and loyalty toward their local community and citizenship. During the short period of the Republic, though there was much less of centralization, and there were many extremely "free schools," the curriculum and the methods of instruction in the majority of schools of Germany were somewhat broader and richer, from the standpoint of community study, than before 1918.
