Despite its title, Dewey G. Cornell’s latest book is really a book about one specific kind of school violence: school shootings. (Bullying is discussed, but the primary focus is school shooters’ experiences with it.) Although among the rarest forms of school violence, school shootings are the subject of great media and public attention. Over the years, fear about the possibility that such extreme violence could happen again–at any time and in any school–has prompted school leaders to adopt policies and practices that are “tough on crime” and aimed at making schools safer. Cornell argues that much of the decision-making about how to make schools safer is driven by fear, not facts. He is critical of the reliability and validity of much of the data currently available about school violence. On one hand, much of this data is misinterpreted; on the other, Cornell contends, the data are outdated, based on false reports... (preview truncated at 150 words.)
