Building on the work of whiteness studies over the last 30 years, Louise Derman-Sparks and Patricia G. Ramsey answer a question that many white caregivers ask: What if all the kids are white? This book is about helping white pre-school children and their families to become less racist. The authors do not simply offer ways to respond when a child says something biased. Rather, they suggest a comprehensive approach—involving history, theory, strategies, and resources—through which white children and families can learn more about their place in an inequitable world and how they might challenge these inequities. Importantly, the book specifically helps caregivers address whites who might otherwise think that they have nothing to do with racism. The approach, based on Derman-Sparks’ and the A.B.C. Task Force’s (1989) pioneering anti-bias curriculum for young children, starts out explicitly focused on the construction of whiteness and white identity. The first part of the book...
