Theory for Education is the third volume in the theory4 series by Routledge, following volumes on theory for religious studies and theory for art history.  The purpose of the series is to provide short synopses of key selected theorists whose work has particular relevance for an area of study.  In Theory for Education, Dimitriadis and Kamberelis provide such information for four “predecessors,” (Dewey, Freud, Marx, and de Saussure) and twenty “theorists” (Bakhtin, Bernstein, Bourdieu, Bruner, Judith Butler, Deleuze and Guattari, Derrida, Foucault, Freire, Geertz, Gramsci, Stuart Hall, bell hooks, Lacan, Piaget, Edward Said, Spivak, Vygotsky, and Raymond Williams).  The synopses are short, ranging from 13 pages for Dewey to 5 pages for Bruner, Butler, Freire, and others.  Each selection is accompanied by a bibliography of further readings by and about the theorists and their use in educational scholarship and research.
