Have you ever read a book that you wished you wrote? In 2004, the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) published Charter School Achievement on the 2003 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), in which it concluded that NAEP data supported the assertion that charter school students perform less well than their regular public school counterparts.  A report on the publication in the New York Times, entitled “Nation’s Charter Schools Lagging Behind, U.S. Test Scores Reveal” left no doubt of its attraction to charter school opponents.  Almost immediately following, a full-page advertisement in the Times, entitled “Charter School Evaluation Reported by the New York Times Fails to Meet Professional Standards” sponsored by the Center for Educational Reform (CER), presented the other side of the argument in the form of seven bases on which to criticize the AFT report.
