Matt Copeland teaches at Washburn Rural High School in Topeka, Kansas.  He frequently presents at local, regional, and national conferences and has published At the Crossroads: Learning to Reflect and Reflecting to Learn: Reflective Learning Activities for the Modern Classroom (The Writing Conference, 2001). In his teaching, Copeland has found that effective strategies to involve and encourage students to participate in meaningful and stimulating dialogue about a text often elude both novice and veteran teachers.  Trying to get students to think for themselves and to participate in student-led conversations about a topic or piece of literature is often like pulling teeth -- students seem to forever look to the teacher for the “right” or at least some semblance of an answer.
