A great deal of academic study in the last 25 years has focused on how best to apply technology in school settings. Unfortunately, in-service teachers, even those who have come to love their computers, still remain fundamentally uncertain about how to use technology to solve real, everyday classroom problems. The reasons are many, not the least of which is that digital systems are not a traditional constituent of learning. The book has been the dominant learning technology for centuries. No wonder teachers and academics find digital technologies strange, uncomfortable to talk about, and more than a little baffling. On the other side of the coin, nonengineers find it difficult to grasp the potential digital systems have, or could offer, in educational settings because of their appliance view of digital systems.
