In All Together Now: Creating Middle-Class Schools through Public School Choice, Richard Kahlenberg makes a comprehensive statement about the negative effects of concentrated poverty on educational opportunities and academic achievement in the U.S. The primary premise of the book is that the educational opportunities and outcomes of low-income youth can be greatly improved through the creation of "common schools" or schools with student populations that at a minimum are 50 percent middle-class. According to Kahlenberg, "Economically integrated schools will raise the achievement and improve the life chances of the poor without reducing the achievement of the middle-class . . . (p. 25)." He further states: Apart from the achievement effects, socioeconomic integration, and the racial integration it entails, is likely to produce a more cohesive and humane society, one in which people are less likely to view one another as "others" with the added benefit of taking the direct focus off race per se (p. 43).
