The appearance of the 1981 National Society for the Study of Education (NSSE) yearbook, devoted to an explication of the state of affairs in philosophy of education, raises important questions. What can educators reasonably expect from the philosophy of education? How can the analyses generated by philosophy inform the practitioner about the meaning of what he does? And how can such analyses provide a diverse and often unsettled public with ideas about how various educational mechanisms in the society might be directed? In sum, how can the philosophy of education assist the field in critical reflection about what is going on in education and in planning for the future? Both the Introduction and Harry S. Broudy's chapter in this yearbook raise such questions.
