Why bother to do further descriptive or analytical studies of inequality in the United States? We already know the facts of inequality, that family incomes and other measures of economic well-being show a considerable distance between the most and least well off. We also know that the distribution of income, with the highest-income fifth of families averaging about eight times the income of the lowest fifth, has remained virtually unchanged in thirty years, that the discrepancy between men's and women's earnings has stubbornly refused to diminsh, and that, with the possible exception of those of the young and well-educated, minority/majority income differentials have remained intransigent. Further, if there were effective strategies for achieving equality through better or more education or training or some other widely acceptable, relatively inexpensive method, it seems certain that our studies to date would have identified them.
