American education is as diffuse and as inclusive as American life itself. This is the main thesis of Lawrence Cremin's new book, in which the author traces the development of an American culture from its shaping during the Revolution to its consolidation after the Civil War. A combination of cultural history with intellectual history, educational history with sociology, the second volume of his projected trilogy continues the inquiry into an American paedeia that characterized his earlier volume and points the way toward an even more expansive examination of American education during the last hundred years. There is no doubting the scope of Cremin's research, the seriousness of his purpose, or the significance of his achievement. As many reviewers of the first volume noted, his history will undoubtedly dominate inquiry in the field for many years to come, just as Ellwood P. Cubberley's work dominated it previously.
