Voucher debates

Posted By: Martha Murphy on July 3, 2002
I appreciate the thoughtful information. It seems to me a major point is the observation that unless state standards testing is required of private and religious schools, there will be no basis of comparison for effectiveness of education.

However, since many parents, and even professional educators, are opposed to state standards testing (or even to the standards), that would be one reason, in many areas, for choosing other than the public schools. In fact, there is a wide range of opinion on both the purpose of schooling and the criteria for quality schools. These are issues which will complicate the debate over vouchers in many communities. I certainly do not look forward to the debate.
