I would agree with each of them from my own frustrations about my online teaching experiences. But I am left yet with a feeling of how terribly labor-intensive this is. If my online class is of any size more than five or six it takes HUGE amounts of time to bring about the sort of interaction and community you are talking about building. Mly university wants to stuff as many in an online class as will register for it. Luckily I haven't had more than 20 so far but that was still an amplification of my normal prep and delivery time to another power of ten.
