Larry --
I agree and I am very clear about my standards and rubrics -- especially since I teach -- for the most part -- freshman comp classes. My concern, again, is there is no consistancy within our department the department, and indeed, the school.
For instance, in my intro to college writing class I stress the importance of MLA Style, construction of a thesis statement and supportant, and research methods. So when I teach the college writing class I would hope that my students have a good understanding of these concepts and skills. However some of the other adjuncts and profs focus on creative writing. And there the problem lies.
