Moving kids to lower math tracks

Posted By: Sarah Elizabeth on December 11, 2002
At my daughter's school, the most advanced seventh grade math students generally take algebra I or a unique course that covers everything from algebra I to calculus. These students land in four different math classes in 8th grade, depending on what their 7th grade teacher recommended.

Some kids ask to be transferred into an easier math course about a month after school starts, and the school tries to accommodate those requests. The kids' self esteem seems to suffer less from being placed in an easier course (at the appropriate level) than from remaining in a higher-level course that they can't handle.

The same may be true of the two girls in your advanced math class.
