Yes, comprehension is the goal but how we arrive at comprehension is the question.

John, comprehension occurs when readers integrate the text and prior knowledge. Linking is a crucial tool. We must relate all new knowledge to the children’s experience. Experience is essential to comprehension. That is why it is essential for teachers to interact with the students and develop a background before reading. Conversation is our connection to comprehension. Children need to think about what has happened in the text and about what they know from their own experiences. Then they can predict what will happen next and read to confirm, clarify, or disprove a hypothesis and continue predicting. Either prior to the story or following the story decoding skills are taught, in context, such as phonics, syllabication, and grammar.

Reading is a problem-solving process by which the reader creates meaning through interacting with fellow students, teacher, pictures, and text. It is through the interaction that new concepts are formed. Meaning is created as students brings prior knowledge and personal experiences to the page. Comprehension is not taught by asking questions about what was read; that is a testing mode, not a teaching mode. Yet, that is one of CC’s standards. No consideration is given to relevancy - importance to the child when mandating intensive systematic phonics and the learning of sight words. Two very important higher order thinking skills are not developed: imagination and application.

RI.3.1 “Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers.” (Sound familiar, John?) CC believes that the answers are to be found in the text itself so they concentrate on the text instead of starting with the child and what the child knows.
