Read a Post for Trump's Educational Reforms Threaten to Destroy American Public Schools. Is That Such a Terrible Thing? | | Reply to this Post | | The Primary Purpose of Public Education | Posted By: Concetta Donvito on May 30, 2017 | | Dr. Burkholder clearly outlines the impetus for and the primary purpose of public education, namely its critical role in supporting and sustaining our fragile democracy. Without an informed electorate, able to think critically and make sound decisions, our democratic republic may indeed be compromised and find itself on shaky ground. Cutting funding to our nation's public schools does indeed jeopardize the values upon which the US Constitution is based, to "...promote the general welfare and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity." Our children are our nation's future and our legislators and policy makers must put politics aside to uphold those democratic values which we hold dear. School choice policies, which reduce funding for our nation's public schools, do endanger those values and the future of our democratic republic.
