Read a Post for Student Absences: How They Hurt and What Works | | Reply to this Post | | An effective intervention | Posted By: Paul Rigmaiden on May 10, 2015 | | When I first began teaching in the Oakland, California school district in the early 1980s, I heard our principal on the phone with a parent. "Lady, if you don't get those kids to school right away, I am going to call social services and tell them about you!" Then he slammed the phone down. Out of curiosity, I looked out the front door of the school and saw three little kids come from around a corner running at full speed toward the school. The principal genuinely cared about the boys and girls at our school, but he was, as they say, often "too through" with parents who didn't send their children to school. I consider this to have been an effective intervention. |
