The Problem with Rankings

Posted By: Alan Jones on January 18, 2014

Dear Dr. Heinz-Dieter Meyer:

Just a note to tell you how much I appreciated your recent commentary in Teachers College Record. For years, in front of parent groups, boards of education, and my own graduate classes have attempted to explain the shortcomings of all ranking systems in general, and in particular the flaws with international comparisons—your commentary neatly summarized every problem with these types of comparisons (and rankings in general).

It is unfortunate, that your voice rarely reaches popular media outlets, where a pundit and or a representative of the educational establishment is allowed to make unschooled pronouncements about the state of education in our country.

Again, thank you for offering a thoughtful counterpoint to the prevailing narrative of failing schools in America.
