Read a Post for Miseducating Teachers about the Poor: A Critical Analysis of Ruby Payne's Claims about Poverty | | Reply to this Post | | An eye-opening read | Posted By: Nicole Deckrow on July 24, 2013 | | Thank you R. Bomer, J. Dworin, L. May & P. Semingson for writing such a detailed and researched based article on Ruby Payne. Until now I have been on the fence about her work. I am an educator and I believe she is well-intended but your fresh perspectives have helped me to see things from another view. I particularly appreciated how you have pointed out that it is not a noble intention to try to place the middle class values upon all of our students and how it often causes students without advantage more harm than good. I will really take this sentiment to heart. I also really appreciated the discussion that there are far more than just 3 social classes in the U.S. and feel that I see many more classes in my own school, so thank you. Finally, It was eye-opening to read your cited research regarding the fact that people living in poverty have far more differences than similarities. I appreciate the mind-set of taking on each student and family as a unique and special set of people. . |
