|To all the reviewers - well done! I actually planned to write a critical review for ed. studies that would have reflected some of the information in this work. But even more importanlty is why I intended to do this. Teaching in the Arkansas Delta I found several school districts having seminars and professional development meetings for their faculty that used Payne's ideas about poverty and education. The long and short of all this was that misinformation, superficial analysis, and cultural bias plagued the professional dvelopment meetings since her book was the driving force behind the meetings. |
Most troubling was that the teachers and administrators within the distrcts "totally" bought into her ideas. After I pointed out some particularly troubling issues surrounding her analysis to a few administrators and teachers, I "got" the following reply: "Gee - I didn't think about that!"
Payne's work has been used a great deal in public schools. I believe it has not helped our understanding of poverty and education. In fact, I believe it has further stigmatized those who are poor in the eyes of public school teachers and administrators, and not allowed a serious analysis and critique of our economic, political and educational institutions among those individuals.
So once again teachers and administrators - when using her work without critical analysis - become the ideological agents of the dominant elite!
I'm going to deciminate this crtique of Payne's work among educators in this part of the world! It's badly need!
