I have no data on middle class white students and the stare as my work is devoted to ghelping low income. At the same time, I do not doubt that many middle class students grow up in homes where there is little conversation and I suspect they would exhibit the same problems. At least in those circumstances parents are more likely to have the resources to hire people to interact with their children. However, i guess you are experiencing those students who had no source of intellectual nurturing. it would be an interesting sociological study to test this hypothesis with the white middle class students you are encountering.
