National Board Certification for Teachers: A Billion Dollar Hoax

Posted By: Davenport Plumer on February 11, 2004

Why was this poorly reasoned opinion piece published? Other critics of National Board Certification have at lease challenged the fundamental premise that board teachers are more effective in the classroom. This writer offers an unsupported set of opinions and finishes with one of the moat absurd proposals for improving education I have ever read.
The author is so clever at extrapolating the dollars associated with raises for National Board teachers, let him do some extrapolation on his doctoral proposal, looking at cost and time. Compare the cost of getting a doctorate with National Board certification and then look at the evidence that would support the effectiveness of doctoral level teachers in K-12 schools.
Absurd.
