Any time a scientist proposes a new hypothesis he expects it to be attacked. In fact, he hopes it will be attacked. If a theory is worth anything it should become the center of controversy. It's about the only way to test a theory that can't yeild to experimentation.

The fact that Mead's theories have been attacked is in itself unremarkable. What is remarkable is that they have stood the test of time. Mead was a genius. Derek Freeman is not. He, and others, who have resorted to cheap scorn in their attacks are going to fade away really soon.
