The investigative journalism of Fleisher and Freedman is interesting, encompassing, and provocative. Through the case of John Singer they have described some of the difficult educational problems that a democratic society faces. Born in Brooklyn, John Singer was brought to Nazi Germany by his father and as he grew up he was enrolled in the Hitler Youth. The authors hint that such an experience left him with a craving for freedom. They do not mention that it may also have left him with a tendency toward fanaticism. After the war he became a Mormon, returned to the United States, and slowly became a fundamentalist. He not only took the writings of the Mormon founders literally, he set out to live them literally. When his children were presented with a textbook in which Martin Luther King was described as an American hero, he responded by telling the principal: “Martin Luther King was...
