College Entrance Requirements in English: Their Effects on the High Schools

Do college entrance requirements determine the course in English in the high schools? Objective evidence shows that they do, despite the recommendations of the Committee of Thirty. The author has reached this conclusion after investigating the place of English in the high school before 1870 when it was not required for entrance to college, after tracing the development of college entrance requirements, and after studying the testimony of eminent educators, the findings of surveys, and the courses in English offered in representative high schools.
