This series of monographs on public education was conceived and published by a Protestant church organization. Apparently intended for a church audience, it is not about partisan religious concerns. Although written at a time when education critics from the Right and Left abound, these monographs are not simplistic Moral Majority broadsides or ideological attacks. Instead they are reasoned analyses of major factors facing education in today’s society. As with any such series, some are more successful than others. Those that are successful merit attention from those concerned with the future health of public education in the United States. Most of the monographs take the public school as the object of their concern. Still, the larger context of the series is public education, including the several educating agencies in American society, not merely schools.
