With all of the recent talk about improvement of the profession of teaching, it is not surprising to find corporate executives, deans of schools of education, politicians, and news journalists entering into the discussion. Nor is it necessarily inappropriate for them to do so. It would be hard to mount a convincing argument against public interest in the education of its youth. Furthermore, everyone who has been to school is an “expert” on education and can be expected to offer advice based on that expertise. What is surprising, and inappropriate, I think, is to find that for the most part, teachers have not been included in the public dialogue. They have been discussed as a problem to be investigated, or as if they were a condition in need of improvement—as impersonally as if they were cogs in some educational machinery that needs overhauling.
