New Studies in Education: The Relation between Association and the Higher Mental Processes

by J. W. Tilton - 1927

PSYCHOLOGISTS are far from agreeing as to the relation between Association and the Higher Mental Proccesses.1 Some think the Higher Mental Processes may be defined in terms of Association, some think this may be done only in part, some think they are sharply differentiated. The question has been studied objectively, but in previous studies from which inferences have been drawn as to the relation between Association and the Higher Mental Processes, the Association test materials included only habits possessed by everyone tested, the score being the time required to make the habitual responses. These studies seem to have established the fact that there is very little relation between the rate of habitual response and the successful operation of the Higher Mental Processes. More than that we may not infer from them. They throw no light upon the relation between number of associations and the Higher Mental Processes. This study is an investigation of that phase of the question.
