Child-Centered Schools

DO SCHOOLS exist to teach children—or to teach the particularized kinds and amounts of skill, knowledge, and ideal which we call "subjects"? Common sense, confronted by this issue, promptly answers "both." "Verbs of teaching govern two accusatives." "The master teaches John spelling"—or, at least, he helps John to learn to sing (something), to play (at something), or to cooperate (with others, for a purpose). So many, however, are the one-track minds in this world, that entire systems of education may for long periods become complacently oblivious to the significant characteristics of the one or the other of the two accusatives of verbs of teaching.
