This book is a provocation. The authors ask the reader to view it as a “friendly adviser offering . . . suggestions and hints borne of painful experience” (p. 15) with the activity of writing (and reasoning, arguing, convincing). As I ponder it, it is a gadfly of a book. Not only does it challenge the taken-for-granted where writing and even thinking are concerned; it demands that you transmute what they call “habits of thought” into “tools of reasoning” and go on to apply them in focusing your thinking and making yourself clear. From the very start, when the authors lay out their propositions about writing—that it is “a symbolic activity of meaning-making,” “a staged performance,’ and “a tool of understanding as well as communication” (p. 20)—the reader (this reader, in any case) finds himself or herself provoked to a self-reflectiveness that often subverts the familiar.
