One does not have to be an alumnus or a faculty member of Teachers College to enjoy this little gem of a book. All one has to be is interested in a very important period in the history of American education and in one of the figures who played a significant part in that history. R. Freeman Butts-or "J" as he was known to his friends and colleagues- was a member of the Teachers College faculty from 1935 until his retirement in 1975. He was an acknowledged major figure nationally and internationally. Our field needs an autobiography or a biography of J Butts so that we will understand better this critical period. This book is a good beginning but consists of only three papers that deal with three aspects of Butts's career. At the outset, I must confess to much nostalgia and personal identification in reading the volume. I heard Butts deliver the first two of the three papers included here. As a student,...
